Cyclists family says hard yards pay off"

After a long day of cycling in the morning - after all, they should be in the habit of cycling in the afternoon - I was lucky enough to catch my first glimpse of cyclists on the sidewalk outside one of the houses that were being turned into lofts - where people can go bike.

As I was looking towards the house at the time, I noticed a woman with a baby in the arm of a bike. Seeing that we were not, in fact, on the sidewalk, I thought, "well why don't we stay off the sidewalk?" In order to help get this woman to take her child out of the house, I stopped her to chat for a little while.

As we spoke it turned out that she had no plans of leaving her child alone in that house for too long. She had been planning to take her child down to the beach for a week, and then she would ride it back up to the house for a few days as she was not happy being the only one on her bike. This seemed to annoy the mother much enough that she left her baby outside on the sidewalk before we finally stopped talking, which makes you wonder why people ride their bikes through front yards to spend time in the middle of traffic at night.

It turned out that the mother had not been looking forward to going bicycle shopping around town, either. She says she was worried about her children, since they would start learning different skills because she does not normally bike outside. However, they were able to stay out on the sidewalk for quite a bit. I asked her if she planned on leaving her bicycle there for longer and she said that she didn't like the sight of cars and people in front yards so this time it was safe to go.

Her daughter was eventually allowed to use the bicycle. The next day, there were not many people at her house because the neighbors have already left, as the other neighbors are busy dealing with the city budget shortfall. The mother said that she was glad that her husband didn't come down because it was probably a good idea to bike outside to pay for a house down the street.

So after you bike to a job, business meeting, yoga session or any other social gathering you have in the city, do it in the middle of the street in a safe place, a nice neighborhood somewhere where people stop and relax. It may be hard for your friends and family but the cycle can save many lives, and it is more fun to get around in the middle of traffic and pedestrians and hear stories about how the bike has made you feel during the ride.

Kojonup council sacks ceo over alleged racism

Mayor Paul Coad said councillors met to discuss the complaint against Mr Sacks and that he made a comment on the matter.

When councillors heard allegations of "racism and intimidation of residents", they were "saddened and concerned".

"A complaint of racial harassment has been laid against him," he said.

'No way' to settle feud if no clear leader

Councillors have ordered a review of Southland Council following allegations a local candidate had been removed from the position due to alleged racism and bullying.

Last night an inquiry team said the election of council candidate Kevin Sacks as leader of Southland Council last month appeared to be a result of complaints of harassment.

It said that, with no clear leadership team at any time since the election, the matter of a replacement for Mr Sacks was expected to lead to further complaints.

It also said it was very unlikely that Mr Sacks, who stood for Southland Council in 2010, could be replaced or promoted in any effective way.

The incident saw Council members walk away from his seat as the "tire screeching" and "thumping" of his supporters intensified.

One of Mr Sacks' staff was also accused of being on an intimidation campaign.

It later emerged that councilors were filmed making racist remarks about one of Mr Sacks' colleagues.

The council is in the middle of a three-week period of suspension that was imposed after Mr Sacks made the comments to a member of the public.
